We've heard so much about how great the Collins Kids were on the old Town Hall Party shows, but now there's finally a chance for us all to see just how great they really were. Lorrie looked like an angel and sang like an angel. Larry was among the era's most dynamic performers. He could run, jump, and duckwalk.all while playing a guitar that was almost as big as he was. This DVD really sets the record straight. The Collins Kids might have had no hits, but they were among the brightest stars in early rock 'n roll. Here (from 1954-58) they're mostly playing other peoples' hits, blues hits, and pop classics, but they're never outclassed by the originals.

SHANACHIE
NBC NEWS PROJECT 20 / LIFE IN THE THIRTIES (918)
55536
From the Great Crash to the New York World's Fair of 1939, the decade of the Great Depression was also a period of great variety. LIFE IN THE THIRTIES blends haunting images of poverty and desperation with footage of escapist crazes, such as bank night at the movies, Benny Goodman and the birth of Swing, pinball machines and bingo. The period's major dramatic stories are recounted through unforgettable newsreel coverage of the Lindberg kidnapping and the Hindenburg disaster. There were other wars than that between labor and management which captured the attention of the masses. The radio feud of Jack Benny vs Fred Allen and the battle between Joe Lewis and Max Schmeling both offered the nation needed diversion. Brillantly orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett utilizing hit tunes of the period, and narrated by the greatest voice of the documentary, Alexander Scourby, a compelling portrait of Depression life in America emerges. As the Worlds's Fair of 1939 started and the decade drew to a close, events in Europe would soon turn the nation's focus abroad. Black and White

VARIOUS ARTISTS / BUSBY BERKELEY COLLECTION (67846)
59099
The Busby Berkeley Collection is a 6-disc compilation of five remastered Warner Bros. classics from one of the greatest motion picture choreographers of all time. The Busby Berkeley disc is a compilation of over 20 complete musical numbers from nine Warner Bros. films of the 1930s. Busby Berkeley's phantasmagorical musical extravaganzas were a highlight of 1930s culture, a bridge between the insufferably literal stage transpositions of the talkie transition and the later star-centered musical formulas at RKO and MGM. Berkeley had contributed to Goldwyn's Eddie Cantor pictures but it was Warners that gave him the creative go-ahead. The home of Rin-Tin-Tin got more than it bargained for, because Berkeley combined stagecraft cleverness, camera tricks and his own visual ideas to create musical numbers that were wholly cinematic: They could only exist on a screen, and nobody had ever put visuals like his on a screen anywhere. Those moguls must have thought Berkeley was some kind of crazy genius. A compilation of individual Busby Berkeley numbers became a popular laser disc from about ten years ago; this new Busby Berkeley Collection DVD boxed set has five of Berkeley's top titles and a bonus disc replicating most of the contents of the old laser.

VARIOUS ARTISTS / AT THE JAZZ BAND BALL (514)
4531
At the Jazz Band Ball brings together some of the greatest hot music, song and dance captured at the height of the jazz age and in the early days of sound film (1925-1933). Included are some of the giants of the period in their very best early performances: Duke Ellington's Cotton Club Orchestra in clips featuring solos and a floor show, and exuberant, youthful Louis Armstrong, Harlem's "Bo Jangles" Robinson doing his famous step dance, Bessie Smith's only screen performance, a rare clip of the Boswell Sisters harmonizing on a Louis Armstrong classic, and an instrumental from the Dorsey Brothers band with superb solos from Tommy and Jimmy. From L.A. based Fowler Studios comes film of radio star Charlie Wellman, Tessie Maize (a featured artist at Frank Sebastian's Cotton Club) and black-faced performer Ruby Darby. Among the many other clips included is an early (1925) De Forest Sound film of Ben Bernie's Orchestra in which under-appreciated reedman Jack Pettis contributes what is probably the first jazz solo on film. And from the newsreels for the week of May 18, 1928, the title card read: JAZZ KING TEARS UP OLD CONTRACT. On stroke of twelve Paul Whiteman starts his first recording for Columbia Phonograph Co. ...as Paul Whiteman's Orchestra moved from Victor to Columbia Records. Long considered lost, this newsreel story contains the only appearance of jazz legend Bix Beiderbecke in a sound film as Bix stands up and plays through an ensemble brass passage.
